What's it take to be a coach?

Role of stepUP Coach

stepUP events are run over two days with the Teens attending divided into teams of five or six. A Coach is assigned to each team.

stepUP Coaches primarily act as facilitators and mentors to their team to assist them to get the most out of the event. Depending on the event, anywhere from 80 to 200 Coaches take part in each stepUP and our Coach the Coaches Events that happen prior to each stepUP to get you all set for working with your team of teens

As a stepUP Coach you will be responsible for:

  • welcoming team members on arrival;
  • checking off names on the Team roll each morning and after each nominal break e.g. morning tea, lunch;
  • collecting feedback forms, media-release forms and other paperwork from Teens;
  • ensuring each team member understands the set activities;
  • encouraging all team members to work as a team; and
  • providing a safe, respectful and caring environment.

As a coach you will need to commit for both days. You‘ll be building trust with these Teens as they move through the process. You‘ll be a positive role model and for some of them a rare adult showing a committed interest in them and their dreams. To demonstrate that commitment to the Teens you have to be present from beginning to end. Teamwork as Teens Present Their Proposals

Who can be a coach?

Coaches are business people, executives, managers, small business owners or anyone who has excelled in their field of expertise, no matter what that might be. They are people like you, who are dedicated to moving forward in life, to continuously learning new skills and to making a positive contribution to the community in which they live.

Coaches, people like you, are being sought to mentor the Teens at stepUP and help them get the most out of the event. The Teens learn from listening to the presenters and taking part in the business focused exercises. They also learn through their Coaches. Each Coach will work with a team of 6 Teens - and they are your team for the full 2 days. As speakers instruct the teens to complete a task or exercise, your job will be to make sure they each understand the process and get the most of it. Demonstrating hands off leadership and encouraging them to work as a team.

If you‘re reading this, someone in your life sees you as a leader and thinks you have value to add for the Teens, your coaching peers who will be working with you and stepUP. The only other proviso is that you have to be interested in teenagers, truly see them as the future of this country and be willing to go for it - it‘s all about them.

“... I also got a different perspective on youth. Prior I saw a lot of kids not doing what they could be doing, which I thought was just such a waste and I would look at them and think ‘why aren‘t you out there getting off your tail to do something‘, but I don‘t think that anymore. What I see now is that no-one gives them any vision! Without a different view of the world, through entrepreneurs for example, their whole world has to be a pay cheque, the dole or lotto. Everyone who was up there was an entrepreneur and I‘d say that 0.1% of the population ever gets an understanding on who entrepreneurs are and what they bring to the world ... What they need is an understanding or a vision of what they could be and who they could be. Where I was seeing a bunch of kids out there in the world that weren‘t doing anything with their lives, I suddenly saw a bunch of kids in StepUP saying ‘oh my God, there‘s more to life than I thought and I get to go out and get it!‘ which was great for them and an excellent shift for me on youth. Bottom line - it‘s up to us as adults to lead them to a new view. StepUP does that.” Andrew Degn, Director, Harding Commercial Investment

Investment

The cost to put on a stepUP event is approximately $265,000 or $530 PER Teen based on 500 teens. The Teens themselves pay just $25 and the speakers donate their fees of $5,000 to $25,000. It is this contribution that makes stepUP special - everyone is there for something bigger than themselves, as a result it‘s truly great to be a part of it.

For coaches it means investing in a coaching spot or sourcing support in the form of sponsorship. A nominal fee secures the place of one stepUP coach and effectively enables 6 Teens be part of the event. It is a win-win situation where coach, Teens, speakers, volunteers and sponsors all benefit from their commitment.

What‘s in it for me?

stepUP truly is an event like no other you might have experienced before. It is almost impossible to quantify all of the benefits that you will gain from your participation. For many Coaches it‘s getting fired up about life again, inspiration, team leadership skills, better communication strategies, planning and much more that they then take back to work and home to cause dramatically improved results. For others it‘s a new sense of themselves as someone who makes a massive difference in the world, a new direction in life, new commitment to personal relationships that work and much more. Coaches go through the same 2 days as the teens, listening to all of the same amazing speakers and working through the hands on exercises. What you take away from the event will depend on what you are specifically looking for, whether it be better business results, relationships, personal or career. And don‘t be surprised if you discover things that you weren‘t expecting at all!

There is the experience of being coached by Michael Sheargold, Australia‘s premier business coach. His work with John McGrath and almost any corporate you can name, is testament to that. His leadership is inspirational and offers new skills to lift your own success levels. You‘re also led by Ryll Burgin, Founder of stepUP, her commitment to ‘anything is possible‘ will leave you inspired and trained in how to bring that level of opportunity to your own life at work and at home.

There are excellent networking opportunities with other coaches, the businesses they represent and with the high-profile speakers themselves. You will learn new business, skills, life strategies and tools that will dramatically impact your ability to achieve even greater success in every area of your life. Through your participation in the event you will develop leadership techniques and team building skills that can be translated back to work or home. In addition, communication skills are never tried and tested so well as when you are faced with leading a team of 6 people you have never met, who happen to be teens, and turn them into a great team. For many parents it is an excellent opportunity to better understand this generation.

“I got so much out of it myself for my business and my clients, as well as my own leadership and team building skills that this year I want to send at least 3 of my senior team members - those people that are making management decisions and leading teams of their own within De Pasquale - along as Coaches. Last year even my team noticed a change in me as a result of StepUP. I know it will be enormously valuable to them personally and they won‘t know it until after, but it‘s one way for me to thank them for their efforts. More than that though, it will bring rewards, financial and otherwise, into the organisation as they implement what they learnt and increase productivity, problem solving abilities, cohesion and team culture as a result.”
